When a custom marine-textile job goes wrong, it usually goes wrong before a single stitch is sewn, and it goes wrong in a brief nobody interrogated.
A brief that never gets examined produces a vague pattern, and a vague pattern produces a cover that almost fits, almost lasts, and almost does the job the crew thought they had asked for.
The form at Start the Brief exists so that this doesn’t happen, and it isn’t an exam. It’s the opening of a conversation, and the first of the four stages published on the process page: Brief, then Measure, then Build, then Fit + Refine.
Whatever you send is a starting point, not a final specification. BJ often helps refine it, views the boat or gets on a call, and the team may suggest better materials once it understands what the piece really has to do. Gaps are completely fine, because filling them in is part of what happens at Brief. Palma is the workshop, and the brief is worldwide.
A cover is an engineering decision, specified before it is cut.
Think in three columns before you open the form: the conditions the textiles have to survive, the purpose of each separate piece, and the process that will actually get it built. BJ and Melanie Simons have run the Palma workshop since 2014, with the USA and Europe both core markets, and the package follows the boat wherever she is. You don’t need every answer, because the brief is a conversation and the team helps you fill the gaps.
Conditions are a specification, and the more precisely you set them down, the less anyone downstream has to guess at them.
Where will this piece live? On deck in the Med through a summer of UV, on a boat in a US yard under a shrink wrap, on a delivery, at a marina with a lot of foot traffic and a lot of chafe, in a Tramuntana, or under a boom that sees salt and never quite dries. Each of those is a different load, a different UV dose, a different flex cycle, and a different reason to choose one cloth over another.
If you skip this column, the loft has to guess, and guessing is how a shade cloth ends up specified as a transport cover, or a wipe-clean composite ends up asked to breathe.
Primary canvas at Loft is specified from the WeatherMax family by Safety Components, engineered for marine UV and dimensional stability, and soft-lined Surface Guard constructions exist for a cover that sits against hardware it must not mark. For coated, wipe-clean surfaces we reach for Serge Ferrari Stamoid, and for micro-ventilated shade, Soltis 86 and Soltis 96 behave in a way a solid acrylic cannot. Independent makers such as Sattler publish their own UV and tensile numbers, and those numbers differ, which is the entire reason this column exists.
Write the conditions down in the brief the way a crew would write a weather limit: UV, salt, flex, load, stowage, and who handles the piece. If it has to come off quickly in a blow, or stay on through a winter, or take being walked on, say so.
Conditions also include the boat as it actually is, and not as the brochure photographed it. Winches may have moved in a refit, instruments may have been added on a pedestal, and a sprayhood frame may no longer be square. Remote patterning from CAD, photographs, and measurements can capture all of that, but only if you tell us the boat has changed.
Purpose is the second column, and it is where many briefs collapse several jobs into one noun.
A “cover” that is really a UV shield, a transport lashing, and a dockside presentation piece is three specifications pretending to be one. The cloth, the attachment, the reinforcement, and the way it stows are all different.
Race-First Design is the method that sorts them out, and it asks four questions of every piece: weight, load, material science, and fit-in-the-build. The brief is where those four questions get their first answers from you, and weight and fit-in-the-build are the two that decide how a piece behaves in the hands of whoever has to move it.
Be specific per item. A boom cover that has to be bent on by one person is a different object from a boom cover that a race crew will never see except at the end of the season, and a sprayhood that must keep a watch dry at 25 knots is a different object from a sprayhood that is mostly about shade in harbour. A hardware cover that only sits on a winch at the dock does not need the same load path as one that stays on through a delivery.
Purpose also includes who uses it. “Built for crews, finished for owners” is the workshop line, and it has a practical meaning in the brief: if the crew will handle the piece daily, handling weight and attachment geometry belong in the specification, and not as an afterthought at Fit + Refine.
If you have a hard deadline, put it in the brief as a fact about the programme, and the earlier it reaches us the more room there is to plan the work around it.
Name a single point of contact. A brief that arrives from an owner, a captain, and a management company, each with a different purpose for the same piece, is how Fit + Refine turns into a redesign.
The live form at Start the Brief asks for the raw material of those two columns: photos of the areas needing work, key dimensions, your boat model or class, and your timeline. Once that’s in, the four stages begin.
Brief is the capture, and it is the conversation that turns your conditions and purposes into something the loft can build against. BJ often helps refine it, views the boat or gets on a call to understand the job properly, and better materials may be suggested once the team sees what the piece really has to do. BJ Simons, Loft’s founder, describes how that refining sounds in practice: “They say, we want a rope-tail bag, this big, like that. And I go: if I was a trimmer, I’d put my foot there, so we can’t put it there; we’ll move it.” It is also where we say honestly if made-to-measure is the wrong door.
Measure is patterning, on the boat when we can be there, or remotely from CAD, photographs, and measurements when the boat is in the USA, the UK, the wider Med, or the Caribbean. Palma doesn’t have to see the hull for the pattern to be real.
Build is fabrication in Son Oms. There’s one cutting table and one queue behind it, so slots run in the order they were taken, and the FAQ publishes the deposit, the typical turnaround window, and the no-bump policy in one place.
Fit + Refine closes the process, at the boat when we can be there, and for remote projects the piece ships with detailed installation guidance. It isn’t a promise that every piece will sit perfectly on the first attempt, and the surest route to a first-time fit is a purpose that got surfaced properly at Brief.
Photos of the areas needing work, key dimensions, your boat model or class, and your timeline. Beyond that, a short account of how she is actually used, and a purpose per piece rather than a single word like “canvas”, give the conversation a running start. Material preferences are welcome if you have them, and an honest “advise” is just as useful. None of it has to be a finished specification, and gaps are completely fine, because filling in what you don’t know is part of what the team does at Brief.
The boat can be almost anywhere. Palma is the workshop, the USA and Europe are both core markets, and remote patterning from CAD, photographs, and measurements is how a package follows a boat we haven’t stood next to. Travel to the boat is arranged case by case. The brief should say where the boat is now, where she’ll be at Fit + Refine, and whether anyone on site can take a structured set of measurements.
Tell us the launch date and we will plan the work around it, although the queue itself does not move. A deposit secures the next open slot, existing clients keep theirs, and typical turnaround is 6 to 8 weeks from confirmed deposit, as an operating window rather than a promised calendar date. If the launch falls inside that window and the deposit is not yet placed, the earlier you get in touch, the more room there is to build the programme around the queue.
A rough starting brief is completely normal, and the team helps you sharpen it at Brief before anything is patterned. Fit + Refine then adjusts the piece you specified, and what the refinement stage cannot rescue is a purpose that never got surfaced at all. The cheap time to surface it is in the brief conversation, and that’s the whole point of the form.
